Windows botnets take down most of the major social web services

Twitter, Facebook, Livejournal and some other social web services were completely taken off the air this Thursday past by a massive DDoS attack aimed, wait for it, at one person – a pro-Georgian blogger called Cyxymu. This user is an activist blogger and someone doesn’t like him!

So hoards of virus-infested Windows machines ( about 6 botnets ) have been used to take down a good chunk of the internet. Again. How long do the rest of us have to deal with Microsoft’s pathetic OS and its crippling affects on the Internet? SJVN has even called for a ban on Windows PC’s on the internet – a radical idea but I get where he’s coming from. The main problems are lack of security knowledge amongst Windows users, insecure software, lazy administrators and some enterprising criminals. Put this all in a pot, give it a stir and there you have a means to take down parts of the most redundant network in the world.

It’s not that hard to keep a Windows PC ( with all its vulnerabilities ) safe. Some good AV software, a decent anti-spyware tool and some logic. So why aren’t Windows users doing this!?!?!

My view is that if you need a license to drive a vehicle then you  should have a license to use the Internet. Otherwise, go play in a sandpit and leave the rest of us alone. We have work to do.
